EK's take "we've got exactly one chance to get it right" kinda stuck with me (probably an old 80k podcast). Cheers for pointing to this ancient and timely elaboration.
As USA remakes itself to increasingly irrelevant yet very dangerous hillbilly town, worth attending to how "it" is gotten elsewhere

I work beer. Check the date on which it was canned if available (bottom of can usually). Hazy IPAs are among the most delicate, they will be good out to three months. Other IPAs I'd go six months. Seasonal lagers will be good even longer. Do keep it in the fridge. Cheers!

And by cowboys I'm certainly including masked hombres smashing domestic car-door windows along with those performing extra-judicial homicides on the high seas.

Tell me about how the view from a quasi-continental state with a large GDP validates cowboys above shipyard workers. Please.

I haven't read Sarah Chayes (Thieves of State) on corruption but I have heard her speak about it. (She spent some years in Afghanistan, founded a startup there.)

Entrenched corruption is like metastasizing cancer, even the prospect demands all hands on deck. Culture war infotainment don't cut it.

Worth a look, on Luke Kemp (Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, University of Cambridge) via @bruces.bsky.social

Has humanity over-domesticated itself? Can we distill tech wheat from tech chaff?

I've read a few replies, no one has mentioned Levon Helm. The American voice that locked that band into the days when rock, soul, gospel were folk musics. And what wernt afeerd to take hissef an adult dose and move it onward. Bless you sir, RIP, your legacy abides

The emotional tenor of the Gingrich impact is what I had in mind. Rupert is in the mix as well. Thank you for this valuable and educational thread!!!

Remember the Mommy party v Daddy party? Mommy party gave (Great Society), Daddy party said hey wait we've gotta pay the bills! Then Reagan, and "deficits don't matter" tax cuts. Clinton budgets were the last gasp of sensible federal politics. Then came Gingrich.

The "old folks" (& I would append rural) who are the strongest rmp supporters, do they get out much? Do they believe antifa has literally burned all American cities to the ground? Most importantly do they watch TV?

California Prop 13 deserves a shout wrt roots of the mess. GOP abandoned market econ

I reckon Smith's is a fair take (from a great distance, haven't been there for 30yrs but been paying close attention). As the AI bites into flesh, those dreaming of '50s USA suburbs are more likely find themselves in Gibson's Sprawl whether Asia, Africa, Americas. Let's wish the best to the pioneers
