Dorothy L. Sayers stopped writing murder mysteries around 1938. She wrote more inspirational work, and dedicated time translating Dante' Inferno. What occurred in her life in 1938 to make the change? I have some ideas.

Ngaio Marsh's Roderick Alleyn is the most dashing detective. I love his romance with artist Agatha Troy. Meet/cute in Artists in Crime, romance in Death in a White Tie, delightful in Clutch of Constables. #ngaiomarsh #murdermystery #agathachristie #dorothylsayers #margeryallingham #historicalmystery

Stuck in a scene? Do what the pros do: use brackets. Write what the story beat is:

[Our hero gets out of the fight through clever means]

Then just keep writing what happens after. Maintaining momentum is key to getting the most words on the page. Meanwhile solutions often present themselves later.

Why read books? Because reading opens minds & hearts. It helps us imagine different lives and different worlds; it can help us build a better world. So please keep reading books with kids, and encouraging them to read. There is nothing more important. #literacy #books #reading

These four authors were the best selling writers in the 1930's which got them the title, The Four Queens of Crime. Well deserved! If you haven't read at least something from each writer, check them out! #agathachristie #dorothylsayers #ngaiomarsh #margeryallingham #murdermystery #historicalfiction

Agatha Christie wrote Hercule Poirot from 1920 through the end of WWII. I got this collection in my teens. There are more short stories with Miss Marple than novels, but that doesn't diminish her literary impact! #murdermystery #cozymystery #agathachristie #mysterybooks #missmarple #herculepoirot

Also: If you don't have money to buy my (or anyone's) books, and you live in the anglosphere, before you pirate them, try to get them from your local library instead. They have it or can get it, they pay for the books, and in many places writers get paid for their books being lent. Everyone wins!

As much as I love reading Agatha Christie novels, I also love to read ABOUT Agatha Christie, especially how she constructed her mysteries. This collection of her secret notebooks is amazing! (I have my own secret notebooks) #fourqueensofcrime #murdermystery #cozymystery #agathachristie

Agatha Christie often builds so much of the mystery before Miss Marple arrives! It sets up a different kind of suspense. It makes the readers feel like we have the important job of gathering clues for Miss Marple before she shows up!
