Italian Red Menace on the Hellsite

Well, shit! Assad is gone and although many hoped he would go eventually, I'm not sure how many people thought it would happen now even just 12 months ago.

Had a discussion about the Assisted Death Bill with my wife, an oncology nurse who often has to have very difficult conversations about end of life arrangements, and it dawned on me how surreal the whole thing is. Especially as someone who grew up in Italy.

Gone on a completely unplanned detox from the Hellsite in preparation for leaving for good and holy shit, my mental health is so much better. Even more so coming on here and not seeing some of the most unhinged takes on politics.

Oh dear, this is going to piss a lot of people off. And that's not even counting Bibi and his merry band of racists.

For some reason, this old BBC documentary popped into my head and had to re-listen to it. Still holds a very important place in my heart because it changed my life 16 years ago.

Bastani and Walker are both on that Trump era grifting arc.
Novara seem to be staying away from Bluesky.

With “logic” like this from Bastani you can see why.

Shockingly, I have a couple I can think of from the top of my head.

The first in time order was when I worked for a major airline's Italian ticketing line and a call from Marco Materazzi came through. I got starstruck and made a complete tit of myself mumbling something about the world cup in 2006.
Twitter is doing “best celebrity interactions” discourse so we should do WORST ones

not necessarily like that they were a jerk, just that the interaction itself was a fail on some level

like one time Robert Sean Leonard walked past me and I short-circuited so badly I spilled guacamole on myself

Now that landlords are distracted fighting the govt over having to pay less than half the inheritance tax other people have to pay, it's the perfect time to open a second front with mass trespassing on a 1932 scale to push for the same land access rights for England that Scotland already enjoys.

This is a real tragedy too because who knows where we would be today if decades of work and research hadn't gone up in literal smoke.

Fascists will always target the most marginalised first and then work their way up. Make no mistake about that.
It is little known, but the first book burnings in Nazi Germany didn’t target Jewish writers. It was the burning of the library of the Institute of Sexual Research, which was a safe home for trans people.

It is no accident that fascists today walk that same dark path by targeting trans people. /5

And she still had the gall to claim she's not lying about the encounter.

The first time I heard the 6th movement was, as for many, in Band of Brothers episode 'Why We Fight'. In retrospect, it was an absolutely incredible way to open *that* episode.

Still get chills down my spine when I hear it.

The state of these people.

Manchester Council has failed to uphold 'affordable' housing quotas on new developments due to bullshit fears and towers are being sold as investments, driving rents sky high and pushing people out.

Yet having issues with that is NIMBYism?!

Aside from raging about fascism, racism and bigotry, I also have hobbies outside being an insufferable leftist. In particular, I LOVE photography.

As a way to talk a bit more about that, here's the book I picked up this week. I owe a huge debt to Basilico's photography.

I already had huge respect for single parents because even before I had a child of my own I'd imagine it would be tough. But after taking on a huge load of solo parenting because my wife has been ill, I have even more respect now.

Single parents need to be protected and their wellbeing guaranteed.

Gatekeeping is good, actually. There should be more of this kind of gatekeeping.

(And something that would never happen on the Hellsite)
One of the most aggressively dedicated transphobic people in British media got picked up by moderation lists and labellers instantly on arrival.

This is what community moderation looks like - guardrails against the propagation of hatred.

Been lurking around here a lot more and I'm not sure if it's because there has been an increase of racist and fascist bullshit on the Hellsite or it's just that this place is not a cesspit (yet?) but the dissonance is wild!

The experience of perusing this and the Hellsite is night and day.
November 15, 2024 at 9:33 AM
All this talk about leaving the Hellsite made me realise that I don't even remember the last time I checked in on my photography IG account. And I'm happier for it!

I've still been shooting and I still want to share my work but my desire to do so via IG had pretty much disappeared.

Still dabbling with this thingy but still pleased the epidemic of brain rot 'leftists' and generally fascist leaning dickheads hasn't made it here.

Ought to get more familiarised with this place because I feel my time on the Hellsite is running out.
November 13, 2024 at 12:41 PM
Given this place looks to be relatively sane and the merry band of neo-Nazi, transphobic and racist dickheads haven't made their way over, I'm actually just going to use my own name.

Plus, means I can shout into the ether about things that aren't just my guttural hate for fascists.

As previously mentioned, my escape from our world's hellscape is photography. Today I was so number blind from work I decided to engage in arts and crafts and now I have a working mock ground glass for my 1897 quarter plate camera. That is all.

#bookrecommendation update: I don't have The Silk Roads by Peter Frankopan but do have The New Silk Roads. What I have found though is the £3 used copy of Ahmed Rashid's Taliban. Going to be fun travelling with that.
August 23, 2024 at 5:34 PM
One of the ways I disconnect from this hellscape that is our world is through photography and for three years now I've had a bare wall in my living room as I'm adamant that one day I'll hang a photo I've shot and darkroom printed myself. None of those aspirational stuff from IKEA.

Right, throwing this out to the ether. I have a holiday coming up, I need something to read. Give me your best history book recommendations. Any topic or any tine period as long as it's not Italy or Spain. And something I can source easily within the next week.

Feels like a lifetime ago since I got my A-Level results. My job has nothing to do with my degrees. To young people getting their results today: study what you enjoy, not what you think will get you a job you want. It might not happen and you'll studied something you probably never really enjoyed.
