Australia enacted a law prohibiting the use of social media for anyone under 16 in an effort to protect minors from the mental health consequences associated with social media use. Investor and former Zuckerberg mentor Roger McNamee says social media companies’ business model is “adversarial” to the consumer. And while many associate the ability to post online with freedom of speech, GWU Law School’s Mary Anne Franks says big tech companies are “uninterested in democracy or expression or art. They’re interested in you expressing yourself so they can monetize it.”
