Tatsuya Nakadai, a blazing titan of cinema, quite simply one of the greatest on screen performers ever. Such range and emotion, he was just born to do it.

His work with Kurosawa and especially Kobayashi was solid gold.

Shine on.

This shot from the new AI version of Free as a Bird from Peter Jackson's new slate of Beatles reinterpretations (they're not restorations) perfectly sums up how I feel about all of this slop & post-GET BACK, this shit is being used EVERYWHERE. At least the text is legibile....

Chow Yun-fat is brilliant, a maddeningly charismatic presence, Alex Man unchained and raw, with Cecilia bringing an unstudied and captivating expressionism to her role. This has shot right up to my top favourites of Hong Kong cinema, great film.

The chemistry between the three leads is great and it's less a historical drama that focuses on the ins and outs of what happened at the time, instead using the backdrop of the occupation as a horrifying and dangerous setting for young love to blossom in complicated ways.

Set during 1941 (obviously..) the story follows the intertwining lives of three young people living in Hong Kong right before and during the Japanese occupation during WWII, played by Chow Yun-fat, Cecilia Yip and Alex Man.

Loved grabbing some stills for the first video in my #LukeVsHongKongCinema series, as the transfer on Eureka Entertainment's new blu-ray of HONG KONG 1941 is superb. Though I'd share some here in a little mini thread:

The first ever installment of LUKE VS. HONG KONG CINEMA is here! I review the new Eureka! release of HONG KONG 1941, made in 1984 and starring the one and only Chow Yun-fat in an early breakout role. I absolutely loved this film and the new blu-ray looks incredible Video here: youtu.be/zPcbOYLxhak

One of the coolest villain introductions ever...

The one and only Wu Ma in HONG KONG 1941 (1984) from Eureka Entertainment's great new blu-ray release. The cinematography in this film is gorgeous and the new 4K restoration looks so good.

Gonna celebrate another year closer to death (or "birthday" as some people call it) by filming the first couple of videos in a series I've been dying to kick off for years now... LUKE VS. HONG KONG CINEMA... Watch this space...

This is something I came up with to transition from Part 8 to Part 9, which works fairly well too. Definitely need to tweak it more, and in general, this is just a ridiculous project that I may never fully realise. But it's fun. TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN in one single cut, why not?

Once the Albert/Diane scene ends, I transition to the opening of Part 6, and as its moved from Dougie in the evening to Dougie at night, the Albert/Diane scene feels like a pretty natural buffer. Not ideal but worked out pretty well, I thought.

Part 5 into Part 6 was the first major hurdle. Credits run over Dougie at the statue, Part 6 opens with Dougie at statue.

16 minutes into Part 6 we see Albert meet Diane. I moved that up to bridge to jump from 5 to 6. A moderate but necessary alteration.
