A little jambalaya moment from several months ago since it’s relevant. Legitimately Cajun recipe. No okra. I’ve made small tweaks (like thinner sliced chicken) and made better jambalaya since, but this was the last time I took a photo

I’d like to add that nobody in either of our families is remotely from the Deep South. Neither of us is inherently more knowledgeable than the other on this, but I do thorough research before attempting to make a dish from a different culture lol

Reading it back really made me hurt for teenage Ray. I wish he could see me now. The people in my life came around and now I have unconditional support from my family, a truly wonderful fiancée, and a handful of friends I wouldn’t trade for the world. It gets better. I promise ❤️

For a smidge of context my grandmother is extremely bigoted and also very narcissistic, and she’s been verbally and physically abusive to myself and multiple family members whom I love dearly. There’s a LOT more to unpack, but that’s the gist of it lol
