For the first time in years, I turned on notifications for some apps.

Then I had to go into the apps settings to toggle off a bunch of useless notifications.

Then create a custom ‘do not disturb’ filter for these apps.

Then turn off notifications again. This is a mess.

"The thing we noticed about bubbles is they bring together a bunch of people who have very different motivations.

Some people really believe in the underlying technology, some want to make a dent in the universe. Some people their only desire is power, others who are just total mercenaries. 1/2

Those who say self-made billionaires are lucky are right.

Airbnb would have run out of money and failed if they started a few years later after big housing price increases. 1/2

Sports fans like to watch -

1. their local team
2. the best teams
3. popular teams
4. fun up and coming teams

The NFL, college football and basketball give you all the above.

The NBA gives you # 3 and only # 2 if they happen to be # 3.

The flaw in assuming the sole purpose of corporations is to maximize shareholder value is "sole" means one. To say the that's the only reason isn’t true. Companies are run by humans who have more than one motivation. 1/2

Back in the day, the high cost of CPUs meant computers were room sized (no one had one), now they are pocket sized (everyone has one) thanks to Moore's Law. 1/2

I empathize with the true software developers, the ones who honed their craft and care about the science of computers. Because when coding became cool (thanks Zuck), people like me showed up and messed up your codebase in pursuit of money. 1/2

I'm too young to remember but I've read enough computer history to imagine the Unix nerds frustration when they were advocating Linux or the internet and were told -

"You don't need decentralization, why would you use open-source when you can just use IBM, Windows, or Mac." 1/2

Writing code so good you don't have to explain it is a worthy goal. You'll run into these obstacles though -

1. Engineering is just one department in the company. You have to ship. Other departments and customers can't wait for your perfection.

2. Legacy code. 1/2

A great way to make hundreds of billions of dollars is replace hundreds of thousands of stores with yours.

Most of us are too young to remember that before supermarkets, there were markets. You bought meat from the butcher, milk from the milk man, fruit from the fruit stand. 1/2

Not following your passion and doing something hard and valuable instead is great advice. By putting in the miserable hard work, they’ll eventually get good at it. Once you are good at something you start to like it and being rewarded with more money helps too. 1/2

We call what you are reading a “post” short for “blog post” because this is a “microblog”

The more you treat this like a blog rather than social media, the more enjoyment you’ll have.

Bloggers know crazies are in the comment section, those are replies here. 1/2

Income inequality, erosion of the middle class, unaffordable housing are just fancy ways of saying you're either going to be rich or poor so get on with it!

Learning history solves a defeatist attitude. For example, the middle class pays 30-50% of their money in taxes. 1/3

GitHub Copilot is free now. I turned it off a couple months ago, stopped using Cursor, and Jetbrains version. Not because they aren't good, it's just not how I like to program.

The LSP is good enough for me. 1/2

Basketball was invented in 1891 since then there have been about 117 billion humans on Earth. I bet the majority of them have shot a basketball.

Steph Curry is the best ever at this. Yeah, the best at something should get really rich. That’s a good system.

I don't understand imposter syndrome. It means you doubt your accomplishments and attribute your success to external factors, like luck or timing, rather than your own abilities or hard work. 1/2

Will AI replace developers? I don’t know. Everyone else seems to have the answer though, even the timing.

I’d imagine it’ll be like self driving cars (or planes). 1/2

Housing can’t be a good investment and affordable.

Every attempt we make at affordable housing is really just temporarily slowing price gains. In other words, band-aide on a broken arm.

Accept the inevitable and act accordingly. Buy and get rich or move away to avoid poverty. 1/2

The NBA is a perfect example of maximizing shareholder value gone wrong.

They just 3x their TV money despite losing 1/2 of viewers.

If I want to watch my local NFL team, no matter what TV service I have, I can. 🏆

My local NBA team? Not on local TV, not on YouTube TV / Hulu. 1/2
