More and more, I hunger for the real story in this horrid morass, because every new detail that emerges convinces me that it's fucking interesting. Nuzzi was engaged to Ryan Lizza, who was dismissed from the New Yorker because of sexual misconduct allegations! And Lizza just published a blog claiming that Nuzzi also slept with Mark Sanford during the 2020 election! And Nuzzi recorded a song when she was sixteen called "Jailbait" where she sneers about seducing much older men! The real story exists, dammit—I can smell the sadness emanating off it like rot, all that selfishness and narcissism and addictive behavior. Now, it's not my business to moralize. Indeed, I'm starting to feel bad for Nuzzi because of how many journalists are gleefully moralizing about the skanky things she's done. Well, I'm guilty of plenty of skanky behavior myself, and so is every uppity journalist being all pious about how they would never and they could never and can you imagine. I can't judge about any of that. I can, however, judge a memoirist for declining to write honestly and therefore compellingly about her awfulness. I write honestly about my awfulness; it's a charge I take seriously; being a memoirist who refuses to do so is autobiographical malpractice.

Carnality is everywhere in Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 Frankenstein. I use “carnality” here more for its associations with meat than with sex. I can’t remember another recent film that treats flesh with such overt, expressive sensuality. In one early scene, little Victor Frankenstein’s pregnant mother eats raw offal on the grounds that it’s good for the baby, and we cringe not only because we know this to be incorrect but because of the way the meat squelches between her teeth. Years later, Dr. Frankenstein combs a newly christened battlefield for corpses to build his famous creature. He slaps the dead with vigor, digs his fingers into their purpling thighs. His scalpel cutting through human tissue sounds uncannily like a steak knife slicing a buttery filet. This director demands that you love oozing, stinking, rotting life as much as he does. He knows you don’t know how, and he is going to spend the whole film showing you.

What I do know is that AI is not your fucking game and it's not mine. You see your slop-gobbling VP going one way, you go the other way. You hear me? The LLM-lubbers go one way, you go the other way. Hell, the hard part's done: you already know you don't want to live an AI-inflected life. A whole lot of people out there don't realize that yet, and for some of them the knowledge will only come after a great deal of pain, but you know what you must do. Write a novel, write a poem, scribble them on printer paper when your VP isn't looking if you have to. Get flowers for your desk and frames for your photos, write longhand in a diary every day. Buy a secondhand DVD player and secondhand DVDs. Smell a library, pull faces at a baby, splash cold water on your face. Call your friends on the phone even though it sucks and everyone hates it because texts and DMs suck more, just nobody realizes it yet. Pay for more things with cash and drop the change in a desperate man's paper cup. Cook enough of every meal to share with your neighbors, especially the unhoused ones. Sing Biz Markie's "Just a Friend" at karaoke because it's fun and everybody loves it. Live a life out in the real, palpable world that you can be a little proud of; refuse assaults on its dignity. You can only do what you can do, and life will feel wonderful again once you truly get that—fuck, I'm tearing up, believe me, it will shock you how wonderful life still feels. And the rest, again, is not your game.
