Yeah, the equivalent companies today are making bank on kickstarters. But those come with their own pitfalls in the form of unexpected/hidden costs. I've heard of some (mostly board) game companies "borrowing from Peter to pay Paul" counting on every kickstarter to overfund & help pay for the last 1

The tech wasn't there in a lot of ways. Nowadays PDF publishing is an accepted and even an expected standard (I remember TTRPG review show "Game Geeks" referring to DriveThruRPG as a new "alternative" way to get your RPGs somewhere around 2009 -11) & print-on-demand is easily accessible to everyone.
