A large Gila Monster on patrol in the springtime. Quail have just started laying eggs, and it's time to find them. These venomous lizards are nest raiders, taking in eggs and baby mammals when they can find them.

This neonate Western Diamondback Rattlesnake was found coiled up in a Buckeye backyard. The little one doesn't quite know where to go yet, and they often don't make it through their first season. Marissa helped it find a better spot to hopefully see its first spring in a few months.

Releasing a pretty Southwestern Speckled Rattlesnake to suitable microhabitat within its estimated home range in south Phoenix. These specialist snakes need certain habitat, and can't be just dumped anywhere. *cough fire department snake relocations cough*

This was a fun one. Cheyenne responded to a call for a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake in a garage. The homeowners had been noticing things knocked over in there recently, so this is not the culprit they'd expected.

A call came in for a mystery snake in the backyard. They knew it wasnt' a rattlesnake, but definitely wanted it removed. Maggie arrived and found it on the wall between their yard and the adjacent property.

A late night call to Queen Creek had Maggie catching the heaviest rattlesnake she's seen all season. This big Western Diamondback Rattlesnake was looking for a way out of the backyard when she arrived, but couldn't fit! She helped get it to a better spot outside of the neighborhood.

Back in September, homeowners called with a baby rattlesnake on the front patio. They were about to have a birthday party, so it was important to have a safe area before the kids arrived. Maggie went out and retrieved this young Mojave Rattlesnake and got it to a better spot.

A Sonoran Gophersnake got stuck in a well ... the second one in a month! This one was much larger than the last one and couldn't get out on its own. Maggie got the snake out and gave some advise on how to prevent another snake from getting in.

Late-night Western Diamondback Rattlesnake for CJ in north Phoenix. Though there was a sliver of habitat not too far away, the home was certainly not the first place he would have suspected to find one.

This Southwestern Speckled Rattlesnake was found by a homeowner in her driveway. By the time Cory got there, it had made it into a wash directly behind the house. He was able to find it, however, and take it off the property to put into a carefully selected hiding spot appropriate for the species.

A hotel in Tucson called us for help with a rattlesnake resting in front of a guest's room. Gary went out there to retrieve this absolutely beautiful Tiger Rattlesnake. He checked it out to a more appropriate spot and got reservations at a packrat midden built into the base of a palo verde.

Bird feeder = rattlesnake feeder

If you feed the prey, you feed the predator.

This is what we mean when we talk about how rattlesnakes on a property are often a decision. If you don't want rattlesnakes at your place, treat it like you do any other potential risk: mitigate through prevention.

This stunner of a Mojave Rattlesnake was found in the backyard between flower pots at a home in Florence. The homeowner went to let the dogs out and heard a rattle (everyone's fine). Austin returned the snake to natural desert and released it directly into a rodent burrow.

A homeowner was out feeding the horses when she saw this Western Diamondback Rattlesnake in front of the barn. By the time Jeff arrived, the snake had moved to take shelter under a cart. The property was wide open to the natural desert, so there will always be the occasional visitor.

Bonus: toad.

This Blacktailed Rattlesnake was found in a shady spot at a home in Yavapai Hills, Arizona. The homeowner had just started to walk up the spiral stairs when she spotted the visitor. Dane helped the snake get up the hill to a suitable release site.

Arizona Black Rattlesnakes are amazingly variable in appearance across their range. Most that are seen and photographed are in the relatively well-populated areas of the Mogollon Rim between Flagstaff, Prescott, and Payson. In other parts of their range, however, they look a bit less familiar.
