I see this in direct connection to #Iran pres Pezeshkian’s recent statement that Supreme Leader Khamenei has rejected potential talks with US as “pointless”. Pezeshkian had more or less promised talks during campaign and Zarif was key to this.

The desperate acrobatics underpinned by sheer intent to whitewash the rise of overt fascism - oh, sorry, **insincere Nazism** - in the American political class is, well, baffling to observe.

Iranian pro-regime Telegram channels now running infographics explaining how Khamenei over six months had been warning Assad of his impending fate and need to do more to resist threats.

Iran’s president Pezeshkian paraphrased to the extent that “the Syrian people will decide future of their country”, without “external destructive influence”. As if Iran hadnt spent approx 30-50 bn USD on their interests in Syria, keeping Assad regime alive since 2012. Stunning switch in rhetoric.

Khamenei's mouthpiece, Kayhan, front page for Monday: "The fall of Damascus, the end of the terrorists' task, the beginning of US hegemony". #Iran #Syria

Addendum: Pezeshkian tweeted two hours ago that “we can write a law but if it is unjust, it is not implementable”. Interpret that as you may.

There’s even some discontent within clergy. This is the front page of daily Setāreye Sobh today, boasting a range of ayatollahs, some dead, some alive, objecting to a policy of hijab enforcement.

For example, Nasrin Sotudeh, human rights defender, and Sadiqeh Vasmaqi, regime critic, both based in Iran, have lambasted the Bill as “shameful” and demanded all misogynistic laws dismantled.
December 2, 2024 at 9:11 PM
The Bill has faced strong criticism and condemnation from Iranian human rights activists, regime critics, lawyers as yet another assault on women’s rights, institutionalization of gender apartheid and policing of women’s bodies.
December 2, 2024 at 9:11 PM
This is particularly controversial after the Woman Life Freedom uprising following Jina Mahsa Amini’s killing in moral police custody when thousands of Iranians across the country demanded gender equality, freedom and end to the Islamic Republic.

taxi drivers, shopping malls, public institutions are forced to report anyone who doesn’t obey hijab law; violators will face substantial and escalating fines, and if not paid, other sanctions, e.g. loosing vehicle registration or blacklisting from exiting country.
December 2, 2024 at 9:11 PM
In essence, the bill seeks to disperse the effort of policing women beyond the Moral Police: an app is launched where citizens can snitch on fellow citizens (“Popular Reportings”); surveillance is severely tightened;

The lawmakers claim the aim is to strengthen family values but the bill is a long list of draconian measures to enforce mandatory veiling in public space. Quote from: iranwire.com/en/women/136...

Comments by Mostafa Kavakebiyan, head of pro-reform Hezb-e Mardomsâlâri from debate on nuclear weapons: such weapons are religiously unlawful; technically impossible to achieve; futile or counterproductive as deterrent. Weaponization equal to "playing on [Israel's] turf", i.e. a trap.
