Great interview on Desert Island Discs.
I’m glad I’m not the only research scientist to have had their best ideas in the morning shower!

RIP the legend that is Janey

I don't buy papers or watch TV... but listen to the radio all the time! Following her death they've re-run her last radio series this month.

The colour science in the article is all good, but orange, pink, white and many other colours are also a mix of different spectral colours, not just purple. So it's the attention-grabbing headline about purple being in some way special that is simply wrong.

What is true however is that the sensation of colour is entirely down to the human brain (with a bit of help from our eyes). But that's true for every single colour, including pure spectral colours (single wavelengths), not just purple.
Pure spectral colours only really exist from lasers anyway.

Sorry, that's complete and utter rubbish. Very few colours exist as pure wavelengths. Total twaddle!

The carriage in the photo (LCDR 48) came to the Bluebell Railway in 1962, having been in departmental service. Used as a mess van and workshop for some years, it's now in a storage shed to protect it from the weather.
A similar carriage has been restored: www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/pic...

Swanage Railway brought it back from a museum in the USA in 2007. It was never going to be scrapped. It's stored at (and will be on display once it opens to the public) at The One:One Collection in Margate.
