Someone is going to have the write the thing about how “vibe” has become a substitute for meaningful theory in a world where the theory is so clear — grift and power — but we collectively refuse if because it isn’t sophisticated enough to generate make work for empiricists.

My favorite version of this is from Emma Bull's _Territory_, wherein one of the main characters is learning the ropes as a reporter in Tombstone, Arizona:

He'd re-moved words as a gardener might prune the topiary. He'd cut phrases that separated facts from their meaning. He'd made work-manlike sentences graceful, and made halting paragraphs flow. She'd thought he was making her work his own. Instead he'd made it into what she'd meant it to be. She handed the pages back. No, not pages - *copy*. "I see." What she wanted to say was, "I have been given a revelation," but she didn't think Richard Rule would be comfortable in the role of a literary burn-ing bush.

I was at an event yesterday where Rand Paul spoke via video and talked about how great it was to send ACA money "directly to the people" so that they could work collectively to get better deals on health care.
