For the first 5 minutes of a test, I tell students to put their writing utensils on the ground, I hand out the test, and they can talk to each other while holding the tests. Students shared how much this lowers their testing anxiety and you hear some of the best mathematical conversations.

It’s me! I assign it for my pre-service teachers to listen to and reflect on.
It was wonderful to hear that this conversation from last year has become a curriculum resource for pre-service maths teachers in at least 1 university.

Dr David Butler shares practical insights and strategies for teaching maths at all ages & levels

st want to say a big thank you to Alex Box and Marissa Cashmore @mathsplay.bsky.social for having me on their podcast. www.mathsplay.org/podcasts/fou...
By asking me to explain my thoughts, you made me realise things I hadn't before, and I'm really grateful.

You are not defined by being accepted or rejected to speak at a conference. Being accepted doesn't mean you're smarter, and being rejected doesn't mean you're unworthy. What you want to say has value, even if some people don't reocgnize that yet. #MTBoS #ITeachMath

“A meal of only explicit instruction in procedures is not a well-rounded mathematical diet, depriving students of the opportunity to solve complex, authentic problems.”

I support 20 school districts and 58,000 students as they try (with varying degrees of success) to improve math instruction.

This study confirms the work my team is doing across a wide-ranging collection of unique (mostly rural) school districts.

Lots to unpack and discuss here in every department or grade level in k-12 schools and universities. Nick's list is a great catalyst for candid, thoughtful conversation. This very week starting on Monday is a good time to reach out to colleagues and schedule a time to talk.
The case against grades is sound & research-based, particularly the stress & anxiety caused by reporting to always-on grading portals. If schools still decide they have to use these tools, educators & leaders should make an intentional effort to diminish the negative impacts of grading & reporting!
