I'm nerdy about books, writing, words, cooking, science, nature, science-fiction, tabletop gaming, hiking, and fragrances. #ologite

VAMPIRE HUSBAND (Sorce)

He added cloves to his coffin, but it still smells like dirt and mildew when he awakens, puts on his leather jacket, and takes a swig of absinthe to begin his nighttime morning.

Interesting experience, but I'm gonna pass.

LILYPHÉA (Diptyque)

The creamy aquatic green notes, aldehydes, and water lily here are gorgeous and elegant. It was an instant love and doesn't remind me of anything else I've ever smelled. I would also love this as a candle. I want everything to smell like this.

The best thing about living where I do is that satisfying a craving from a food writing assignment is a 30- to 60-minute round-trip ordeal that I can usually resist. I prefer the convenience of living in town, but at least I get safety, quiet, and food-craving-resistance from being in the burbs.

DANDELION BUTTER (Clue)

I am one with the outdoor greenery. While it's not the honey sweet dandelions in our yard that the bees love so much, it's still a nice green note, almost wandering into green apple territory.

502 IRIS CARTAGENA

The opening smells exactly like my chocolate mint plants, but it then adds a slightly sweet note and cedar. So, it becomes chocolate mint growing underneath a cedar tree (mine is under an oak). Sadly, no iris, but it's still lovely and unique.

SIREN'S VEIL (Tomavicci)

A great name, great bottle, and high price doesn't guarantee greatness. Everything here smells cheap and fake: peach, plum, benzoin, sandalwood. It's not bad but just smells like a cheap bedtime scent. Alas.

GIRL OF NOW (Elie Saab)

When you fall in love with a flanker before smelling the original, the original can be disappointing. I mean, it's nice, but it's missing the pineapple, iris, and patchouli that makes Girl of Now Shine a top 5 for me. Tonka isn't as fluffy.

PORTUGUESE MAN O' WAR

Zoologist is always a questionable experience. A gunpowder- & seaweed-covered warlord is taking a shower by the ocean with Coast and Zest soap. There's a barrel of gasoline nearby. Sniffing the air seems dangerous but weirdly addictive.

DISPELLED (d.grayi)

This one's amazing in cold weather, & is the essence of coziness. You're wrapped in a warm blanket that's been stored with a sachet of lavender & other herbs, & you're drinking Earl Grey tea while reading an old book smelling of warm vanilla.

SCANDALWOOD (Heretic)

I didn't like this in hot weather, but it's perfect now that it's cool. What strikes me most is the real sandalwood note, bolstered by a nice rose. Plus, there's an antique rose note. It's comfy but hardly scandalous.

VENICE ROCOCCO (Arquiste)

I didn't care for this one in summer, but in cold weather, it's a bury-your-nose-in-your-wrists stunner. Rose stars, infused with violet, chamomile, & powdery iris. Sweet animalic civet reminds me of Shalimar, but modern enough for the younger gen.

Now I've got to paint my office because I'm over here writing an article on Joanna Gaines' favorite color combos, & I like her nature-inspired colors. I've been meaning to paint it for a while, but I could never land on a color, but I think it shall be Morning Calm.

MAGIE ROUGE (Marrakech Imperial)

I'm thinking this one must work better in hot weather. I love its powdery acacia and violet notes, but in the cooler weather, it smells a bit like pencil lead and paper with a hint of velvety powderiness. Lesson learned.

DOLCE AMALFI (Xerjoff)

I want my vanillas smelling like resins and smoke and cardamom and saffron, and this one has all of those. I fall in love with it every time I wear it.

COVEN (Andrea Maack)

She's more goth than witch, and she's opening up a fresh pack of clove cigarettes in an earthy clearing in the woods under a full moon, telling witch tales to keep everyone jumping at their own shadows.

THE COVETED DUCHESS ROSE (Penhaligon's)

You're in a tea house on a warm day, sampling various iced teas. You're having a mandarin orange one, and your companion is having a rose petal tea. Together, they smell like this. It's gorgeous but becomes a skin scent in 30 minutes.

COEUR NOIR (Heretic)

Once you've smelled L'Air du Desert Morocain, this is just disappointing because it feels like just the old barn wood note with none of the extras. I was giving this sample a second chance, but it's still not living up to its gothy name.

BABYLON (Penhaligon's)

A favorite when it turns cool. Tobacco and leather on a woodsy, fruity, spicy background with light saffron and a smidge of powder and booze. Feels like a subdued version of Triumph of Bacchus, but they're both loves. Very unisex.

L'AIR DU DESERT MAROCAIN

Doesn't smell like Morocco but old wood notes, labdanum, resins, and hay. It's also smokey, powdery, and incensey. I envision a barn with a bonfire in fall. Lovely classic. Glad I started w/ a decant rather than a sample.

PURPLE SUEDE (Goldfield & Banks)

LA BELLE and LA BELLE LE PARFUM (Jean Paul Gaultier)

Fall weather calls for bringing out the ruby red mature perfumes. Both of these have ambery rich pear and possibly patchouli notes, but the le parfum version is muskier. I definitely like the original at the end of the day.

TRIUMPH OF BACCHUS (Argos)

Vanilla pipe tobacco, rum, leather, and saffron on a fruity background that changes between apple juice and grape juice. There's also a hint of patchouli. It smells decadent and expensive and is quite a mood in itself.

The weather is perfect for AMBERY MUSK. It's powdery amber, rose, musk, and bergamot that smells simultaneously modern and old fashioned. I feel like I need a tiny, yappy dog named Fifi when I wear this.
