Agree that it's unexciting. Not enough variation, and I'm not typically a fan of dice pool systems. That said, a d4 barely feels worth rolling.

At the extreme of 20d6, you're looking at 3.3 sixes on average. So 70 damage and -1 or -2 hp per Hit Die; or effectively losing 90 to 110 hp at level 20. A barbarian is still going to walk it off, but it will have a lasting impact (hah!) that a simple cure wounds won't heal.
