1/ Amazing how much magical thinking I see MAGAs on the other platform engage in on the how the tariffs play out.

No, Trump unilaterally reversing course this second, or even reaching a deal with China, does not alter the fact he could change his mind again in the next second.

A post on X from a new account purporting to be Sam Bankman-Fried states that he has just been pardoned by Trump.

Further goes on to say he'll be working for DOGE.

No media links to share so far, though.

It's hard to dispute that a global peace dividend is worth the trillions in GDP the world has enjoyed and spent trading, building infrastructure, innovating and lifting people out of poverty.

Trump's new Mar-a-Lago Accord, however, has second and third order effects which are not obvious ...

A question for my mutuals in the United States: why do public officials take an oath of office when there is (or seems to be) no penalty for violating said oath?

And don't forget that Hitler's party won a decent chunk of the vote in a democratic election that preceded him becoming a dictator.

It's amazing how much of history's tropes recur.

What's even more amazing is that people support leaders who go on to repeat such tropes.
He orchestrated a coup. It failed.

He was a convicted felon.

He rose to power on a wave of divisive propaganda and hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric.

He promised to make things great again.

He threatened to annex his neighbors.

I'm referring, of course, to Adolf Hitler.

The Munich Pact of 1938 is a clear lesson from history that appeasement doesn't work.

Every school kid knows what happened next.

BTW, none of the above has any bearing on current events. None whatsoever. Not one single bit. /s

Hear, hear.
No don’t want the ‘Pro’ version of the computer, I want the ‘Amateur’, which doesn’t hide commands in obscure places, doesn’t want to keep updating everything all the time, and is on good speaking terms with the printer.

You'll need to be of a certain age or older to get the reference. 😂
Ok, this is funny as fuck.

Secular constitutions in many countries ask citizens to commit to the ideal of a supreme law above any other law or person.

Over time, this commitment seems diluted as many people now choose their own leaders, cultural norms, ideologies or faiths as sources of supreme law, causing polarization.

Any ideology built on hate is bound to consume itself in the end.

Once followers run out of "the other" to hate, they turn inwards and eat their own. Rinse. Repeat.

Shared civilizational values are abandoned as social media continues to recruit sheep into tribalistic ideologies.

What do deep-state conspiracists and evolutionary biology deniers have in common?

Both refuse to believe that aggregate human behavior shaped by systemic incentives, or natural processes following natural laws, can result in outcomes they (mis)attribute to malevolent or benevolent actors.

Authoritarian-leaning leaders all over the globe are sitting up and taking notice, as the fascist playbook makes a return in developed countries.

Should the current American experiment succeed, we could see the global return of the 1930s. But with the accelerant that is social media.
It's interesting that fascism often emerges to counter socialism, but is often more destructive than the slow(er) rot of socialism.

We can only hope history doesn't repeat itself, but when powerful demagogues arise in turbulent times, the human condition almost guarantees it.
