David Brion Davis's "Inhuman Bondage" is a terrific (in the sense of terrifying) overview of slavery both its horrifying personal cost but also its incredibly destructive effects as a big, international business.

Just finishing my second read through of Stefanos Geroulanis's "The Invention of Prehistory."

(I didn't get much from the first)

It's a difficult read. Not because of the writing. The author is lucid, avoids technical language when possible, and is accessible to moderately informed readers

Marshall Sahlins, in fact, wrote about this: both the warm, fuzzy side (where I am now), and the terrifying.
