On June 14, 2025, Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed at their home by a man impersonating a police officer. Another Democrat, John Hoffman, was shot on the same night by the murderer who is unidentified and still at large.

Her name is Melissa Hortman.

A Cascade Mountain in full view over the wing of a jet. The clouds like a blanket of snow, frayed at the edges as the shore of a sandy beach. Beyond the million year old jagged point, many thousands of miles high, another bank of clouds seems from below casts even this giant into relief. As if a great white foam parted to reveal the ocean floor, and for the sea of air in which we live, this may as well be true. One could see over the crest of our globe into space from here. Yet the eye is drawn to dark side of the mountain, painted white with snow, and the morning side burned dark by the sun, bare stone and moss. Gods of old appearing smaller than anthills beneath a blade of aluminum, a brief and ephemeral record by an impetuous fool. The story of the steel & petrol creation which enabled this collection of photons. A view from the edge.
