@gilbert-lab.bsky.social has been working on some of these ideas!

My hope is after chatting they will understand that they are their needs are valuable

and that they are working in a very broken professional world where if they want to do some things, they may have to work unpaid

and that, sucks, and isn't fair, but its where we are right now

I also tell them that their labor has value, even if they need training, we all need training,

I tell them that it is ok to need to make money, it doesn't make them less passionate, less qualified, or less in any other way

and if that carrot is real, then the organization should be able to show the person people they have hired into paid positions over the past several years, not just like on person 15 years ago
November 17, 2025 at 2:36 PM
and I make sure that they understand that a lot of places that offer unpaid/very low pay internships, hang the carrot of 'well if you do this you'll get a full time job with us' and that that carrot, very rarely actually exists when the internship ends
November 17, 2025 at 2:35 PM
and that they may not think that matters, but if you get hurt 'on the job' but its not a 'job' you probably don't get any workers comp to pay for the medical care

and that, is a very big deal

In addition to other work place protections from harassment, etc.

despite my, professional opinions about unpaid or very low pay positions, I have talked to students who are considering taking them and helped them consider the pros/cons

I always remind them that if they aren't an employee, their work place protections are much less, maybe totally absent
