They aren’t hostile to everyone in Europe. They like right-wing authoritarians who are anti-immigration, like AFD, Orban, Meloni, and … Putin.

It’s just an extension of their domestic culture war, with roots in conservative mid-western of coastal liberal elites. Europe is the coastal elites’ deep hinterland. Attacking Europe is like doing deep strikes against their local adversaries.

It’s not new. Remember freedom fries from the Bush years? The republic right, well before Trump, has a cold-war era hostility to social democratic Europe (or “Yurp”) who have equivocated on supporting America, were inadequately anti-communist, and are just unreliable ungrateful allies.
