The need for certain objects by autistic people can be a combination of sensory, comfort, familiarity, and practicality factors that help to support their overall well-being and functioning.

Some Autistic people may prefer certain items due to sensory sensitivities* as the weight, color, texture or shape may offer sensory input** that's soothing or comfortable for them. Familiarity and routine may play a part too, providing a sense of stability & predictability in an otherwise chaotic world. The design of the item may also offer ergonomic benefits making it easier to handle and provide comfortability

may be missing possible co-occurring conditions. Due to that possibility it's crucial (if possible) to seek a professional. Here are some helpful tips if you're tryna figure out if you're Autistic.

Look for patterns of behavior: consistently exhibit a combination of social communication challenges, repetitive behaviors & restricted interests, may indicate traits commonly associated with Autism Consider sensory sensitivities: often have atypical responses to sensory stimuli. Pay attention to how you react to different sensory inputs such as light, sound, touch, taste & smell Evaluate social interactions: Watch for signs of difficulty in understanding social cues, maintaining conversations, or forming relationships Assess communication skills: may have challenges with both verbal & nonverbal communication. Look for issues such as limited eye contact, speech delays, repetitive language, and difficulty understanding sarcasm or irony Explore interests and behaviors: intense focus on particular subjects or rituals may suggest traits of ASD Consider the context: It's important to understand that being quirky or having unique preferences doesn't necessarily mean someone is Autistic.

Also, I'm a communication major, rather I was. The below diagram can be helpful to many people & can be useful in an effort to understand why self-diagnosis isn't meant to be a one-stop shop* but rather a collaborative effort between an autistic person and an informed qualified clinician

Someone called me a name I won't repeat all bc I was correctin' their misinformation on Autism. It's important to get the information as correctly as possible. There's already too much misinformation! Let's not spread more
More girls have been diagnosed as the diagnostic criteria catches up to the science. Speakin' of the criteria, it's been around since the 1920's. A child psychologist Grunya Sukhareva was the first to identify Autistic children. Her work has gone relatively unknown & remains so even now. Her findings are nearly identical to the current criteria. In the past, the criteria for ASD was very strict & typically applied to white boys. As the criteria catches up w/initial findings, the number of diagnoses have risen. Public education & access also play a role in the increase in diagnoses. Many Auties flew “under the radar” in the past. But today more are being identified. It's not new at all. The blame goes onto racial, socioeconomic, cultural as well as gender bias as to why certain people weren't afforded a diagnosis in the first place. The onus is on the medical & psychology field not the people impacted by their (med & psych) faults.

My turn! I didn't highlight which type of verbal I am. I'm not non-verbal or non-speaking. I used to be semiverbal and while I'm able to speak I don't always do that so well.
