Something interesting you might not have realized: a number of words in English are nouns when you stress the first syllable but verbs when you stress the second.

I just love the unobtrusiveness of #landscape #history, just waiting for us to take a longer, wondering look.

Here, the dark, composted fills of #RomanoBritish ditches in light silty soils bound a long curving drove running from the photo's mid-left margin to the top RH corner ...

1/8 I'm often asked "Why do amphorae have pointed bases?" and as a potter who has now made hundreds of them, I have to say that it's something that I have thought about a lot. For a start they'd be a lot easier to make if they had a flat base. As it is you start throwing from..

A joy and privilege of my work is to be there at the time of discovery and in this case, witness a new fresco emerge from the pumice.
Hippolytus’ gesture and horrified look appear to show the moment he spurns Phaedra’s advances while an attendant seems to be begging him to reconsider. #Pompeii

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖

For your reading pleasure on Confederate Surrender Day, here is The Liberator absolutely roasting Robert E. Lee with a damning bill of particulars shortly after the end of the Civil War. A man "not in the slightest degree penitent, either for his treachery, perjury, treason, falsehood, or cruelty."

Because social media is the place for complaining about minor irritants: why the fuck bother spelling Seattle correctly if you’re going to use pseudo-Greek for the rest of it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's print of the 15 Tokugawa Shoguns can offer a good sense of how fast the Shogunate and Japan at large changed. Here, seated together, are the 14th and 15th shoguns, Iemochi and Yoshinobu, both of whom reigned in the 1860s.

My dear friend and mentor, Sharon James, died unexpectedly a few days ago. She was a fierce intellect, a force of nature, and a big ol' crusty marshmallow. A few of her students wrote an obituary — goodbye, Marylou, and thanks for everything: classics.unc.edu/2023/12/31/i...
