In statements following the November 2024 strike on Dnipro, Putin boasted about the missile’s non-nuclear utility and hypersonic speed. He also mentioned potential deployments of Oreshnik missiles to Belarus, likely to appear to mirror a US-German decision to station American conventional-armed long-range missiles in Germany from 2026. Although Oreshnik carried non-nuclear projectiles last November, the missile is primarily designed to deliver nuclear payloads to any corner of Europe. This warhead ambiguity and uncertainty around basing will give Putin plenty of opportunities to make headlines with his missiles.

So, does that imply that NATO’s other European members don’t care about the welfare state, diplomacy, development aid, peace?

A tweet by Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sánchez from 22 June 2025. He writes: “Spain has reached a historic agreement with NATO that will allow it to remain a key member of the Alliance and contribute proportionally to its capabilities, without having to increase its defense spending or reach 5% of GDP.

We must protect Europe. But we must also protect what makes it unique in the world: its welfare state and its defense of diplomacy, development aid, and peace.”

That new doctrine builds on the regional defense plans NATO adopted at its 2023 summit, which centralized more authority under U.S. Gen. Christopher Cavoli, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, to respond rapidly— in coordination with Eastern European members—in the event of a Russian assault.

However, this year’s summit will go further. It is expected to outline the specific capabilities Europe must field to be ready for conflict with Russia the day of an attack. “Now we have [capability targets] for this concept,” Tsahkna said."

4️⃣ „Wir brauchen eine breite Debatte zur geplanten Stationierung“

Auszug aus dem Text: „Nicht, wenn es wie bei der Bewaffnung von Drohnen läuft. Zur Erinnerung: 2012 sprach sich der damalige Verteidigungsminister Thomas de Maizière für die Anschaffung bewaffneter Drohnen aus. Bundeswehr, Bundesregierung und Bundestag hatten sich bis dahin bereits mit der Materie beschäftigt.

Es folgten weitere Anfragen und Diskussionen im Plenum des Parlaments. Die schwarz-roten Koalitionsverträge von 2013 und 2017 sahen wegen Vorbehalten der SPD-Linken zunächst weitere Prüfungen vor. Wiederholt fanden öffentliche Podiumsdiskussionen und Expertenanhörungen statt. Dennoch war für die SPD-Führung auch Ende 2020 die Debatte weder in der Partei noch in der Gesellschaft „bislang in der notwendigen Breite geführt“ worden.“

Auszug aus dem Text: „Da ist was dran – aber die Sache ist komplizierter. Eine unmittelbare Antwort auf die russischen Nuklearwaffen sind die Multi-Domain Task Force und ihre Fähigkeiten nicht. Aber eines ist für mich der furchtbarste Gedanke, und das sagte ich dem Weltpolitiker auch: „Ich verstehe das alles, aber es ist für mich unvorstellbar, dass meine Kinder in einen Krieg ziehen müssen.“

Er sah mich mit seinem Joschka-Fischer-Blick an. Dann sagte er, fast wie nebenbei: „Das werden Ihre Kinder entscheiden.“ Das war der Moment, in dem ich etwas Entscheidendes kapierte. Bis dahin hatte ich gedacht, dass meine Kinder in meiner Welt leben. Durch Fischers fünf Worte habe ich verstanden, dass ich längst in der Welt meiner Kinder lebe.
