1. My latest piece for NEE concerns #Bulgaria's rampant failure to implement the Kolevi ECtHR judgment of 2009. This is the most pivotal judgment concerning Bulgaria's #RuleOfLaw as it identifies a core structural problem of our justice system - the impunity of a sitting General Prosecutor.

1/2. As I argued in a post for the VBlog last year, the design of the EPPO, including the way European prosecutors are appointed, facilitates the spread of national #RuleOfLaw problems and corrupt practices: www.eppo.europa.eu/en/media/new...

1/4. 23 years since the brutal murder of prosecutor Kolev and 15 years since the pivotal #Kolevi #ECHR judgment, not only the Prosecutor's Office remains unreformed, but Kolev's murderers continue to be shielded from criminal liability. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/program...

Reminder: The EU Commission has a well-established record of *not* enforcing EU rule of law requirements and looking the other way for political and geopolitical reasons. See eg work by @radosvetavassileva.bsky.social

Austria's Der Standard rings the alarm about the rule of law crisis in #Bulgaria.

Happy to see I was quoted. Yet, it is saddening that Western media have started paying attention to the drama only recently.

Happy to share my latest article for the VerfBlog! I analyse the implications of CJEU's formalism in its latest judgment concerning the compatibility of Art 19 TEU and Art 47 of the Charter with a situation in which the members of a judicial inspection body have remained in office indefinitely.
Bulgaria’s judicial bodies operate on expired mandates, blocked from renewal by political deadlock. RADOSVETA VASSILEVA (@radosvetavassileva.bsky.social) argues that a long-awaited CJEU judgment fails to confront the resulting collapse in judicial accountability.

We (DRI) are finalizing data collection on compliance with the CJEU rulings in EU Member States. We'll cover the rulings issued between 1 January 2019 and 1 January 2025. The report will be launched in summer. It is the 3rd edition providing updated data. Some preliminary reflections here: 🧵1/

Honored to have contributed a paper to the 'Legal Survivals and Global Lega Pluralism' workshop held at the Onati Institute for the Sociology of Law (Spain)! My paper examines the peculiar transformations of the Bulgarian rules of socialist coexistence. #LegalHistory #LegalSurvivals
