The scream was agony, piercing, unbearable agony. It was as if the minotaur was reliving every moment of pain it had ever experienced, and at a magnitude far greater than its initial infliction. The flesh began to bubble and burst around Tyrinal's hands as the horns began to swell and grow outwards. Its eyes sizzled and steamed. Its legs were frantically yearning to run on the ground. The minotaur grabbed hold of a horn with each hand once they grew within reach of his struggling arms. In what had to have been desperation, the creature tore his own skull in two. The body collapsed to the floor, hands locked in death around the swollen horns still attached to one half of the skull each.

Most of the undead had been silenced and dispatched during the carnage of the battle. In those moments of observing Bedlam, I noticed the animated bodies did not bleed red. It was black. I thought nothing of it originally, assuming it was the necromancy festering within their bodies over countless days, weeks, or possibly months. But as the moments continued to pass, there was a foul, sulfurous smell overtaking the salty odor of the sea. It was not corruption swimming in their maligned bodies; it was oil. The oil had been seeping out and covering the bodies of Krale, Paladins, and the entirety of our ship’s deck.

The fog gave way, and a morning sun revealed a youthful landscape off in the distance. Trees stood tall and dense, rising above the rocky shore that was welcoming our weary craft. The song of the open ocean had reached its conclusion, allowing a windswept melody to provide much-needed relief.

Inside each cabin was nothing spectacular. There were four beds occupying much of the floor space, adorned with the hides of elk, bear, and wolf. The floor itself was also littered with the skins. Proofs of previous kills were hung along the wall, with future space for other trophy kills. A singular table with three chairs suggested that the occupants did not all occupy a meal together, and rotting scraps near the beds at least meant the building was sealed well enough to prevent rodents from sneaking in.

Damion had prepared me to encounter dwarves here in Dessara, but not one who belonged to the bloodline directly responsible for my creation. Foremarch was as I expected, not one to have a long, proud beard like other dwarves. His was more of an elegant goatee, rigorously maintained, not a single black hair longer than it needed to be. The hair trailing down his back would be the envy of many a noble, chic, flowing, with two thick braids on either side of his head. Over an expertly crafted and fitted chainmail shirt, his attire was an elegant leather vest, embroidered in a fine golden thread. Bedlam put his right fist on the wooden table. Then his left. A loud snort preceded the heavy, exaggerated swallow. He leaned forward, his chair scraping loudly against the limestone floor as he jerked his head side to side.

Indeed, it was impressive, a vessel capable of flight and similar in size to one of the countless tradeships I had traveled throughout the years. Capable of housing at least a hundred occupants, if not more. The runes were the biggest issue. Local craftsman, those responsible for the upkeep of the Grand Riotion Capital, were confident they could return the ship to its previous form. Without the runes to grant it flight, however, it would simply remain an impediment to the residents.

She asked to be with me because she knew of the necromancy. Imagine that, at eight years of age, she already knew? Oh ho, her mother must’ve talked about it all the time for her to know what I was capable of doing. She ...” Damion paused, looking to the ceiling then out the window behind me. “She asked me to raise her mother. To bring her back, so she could tell her mother that one day she wanted to be a farmer when she grew up. She had always seen them with their horses and their cattle, and so she thought to herself that when she grew up, she’d like to have lots of animals with her all the time. Such joy as a child, would you not agree?” He paused again as if he was fighting back tears his body could not produce. “I couldn’t.”

“Get to a roof. Get to a roof, now!” I shouted. “Oh, you gonna let a little shaking and three little words cause you to turn tail?” Kailvrex gibed as she eyed the villagers closing in around her. “They’re coming from the ground!” The dirt and rock began to cave in as hundreds of hands broke through the surface, revealing a legion of undead who continued the mocking chant. Cadence and Margo were quick to climb the same hut as me, but Kailvrex was slow to the ascent. She was able to extend her polearm to our position, allowing us to pull her to safety before a dozen hands crushed the life from her.

“Tyrinal’s magic extends well beyond animating the dead. He can twist and misshape the bodies as he sees fit, going well beyond what the Aru-til Phandra tolerate. Tyrinal has been an outcast from the other necromancers for centuries,” Ethgar explained. “That is also why his movements have been so difficult to track. Among the Aru-til, there are some we begrudgingly call allies, but even they are blind to his actions. He is an unwelcome curse to both of our factions,” Lonel said.

The necromancer’s focus grew stronger as his words trailed off without the usual, unnecessary jovial tone to them. He had family; it wasn’t a lie, the patrons of the inn confirmed that much for me. Whether she had been lost from the invasion was something else entirely. I had a minor suspicion that the great-granddaughter he spoke of was undead, that he could no longer sense her being, and that was why his words were missing some level of genuineness.

“Strength is a virtue I brandish not. For a moment there was some glimmer of resistance, when sweet tranquility rekindled feelings unfelt for an eon. Her embrace only drove me further beyond saving. I am undone. I tread aimlessly in a sea of sorrows, abandoning the shore’s solace. No rest, no reprieve. I am left with one purpose: to ensure the wars, the tale, the pain I felt are absent from my people until the days when the warmth of the sun abandons them. I will unmake civilization, rupturing the core of all life from this plane. I have become you. I have become as wicked as the very worst. It is this place, the people, the Gods, all of it manufactured to make you hate and loathe one another, to make you seek power and dominion over all others! I have lived it. I have experienced it, wielded it with absolute mastery. I have reveled in the forbidden power and understood its allure. But it must end. It has to all end, to be locked away behind steel and stone without a key,” I announced as the blades began to merge before my eyes.

“We would take the people of Dessara, from here, and lead them to Belo. Kept a nice stockpile just in case. Ideally, we would’ve liked to have had rations and water to accompany them on the brief journey. Not much longer now, my friends,” Damion said, distributing the torches to the group. From his robe, he pulled a ruby ring from one of the pockets and placed it on his index finger. He wrapped his hand around the cloth, spun around the torches, muttering a brief incantation, and ignited the torches one by one. After handing each of us a lit torch, I acted as the mediator and handed Ethgar his. Damion stared longingly at the ring before returning it to his pocket.
