So TL,DR: probably difficult to REPLACE all of the sales tax revenue. But there are ways we can talk about improving the equity in our tax system while also raising revenues for the vital services we all rely on.

Additionally, our constitution mandates a flat income tax. So implementing a progressive/graduated income tax like our federal tax system would require a constitutional amendment - which would have to go on the ballot (like proposals 2 and 3 of 2022).

Would the rates ultimately end up being so high that it would be politically infeasible?

However, our sales tax brings in over $10B in revenues (over $13B with the use tax complement). I’m not sure what rates we’d be looking at to fully replace these dollars - the bulk of which go to fund schools (and some to local communities).

Oooh, that’s a tough one! Of course a progressive income tax would help make our tax system more fair and allow us to raise revenues. Sales taxes tend to be regressive but expanding them to “luxury” services and/or only taxing “luxury” items - we’d have to dig in a bit more (definitions matter).
