But my point was that I think for most normals, and certainly the media commentariat that seems kinda lost and wants to know if this was a “left” or “right wing” terrorist, awareness of such online cultures AT ALL is a start. Totally hear you. I think most people don’t even know that universe exists, let alone the nuances of it. I recognize their value as places for those of us who are neurodivergent, queer, or just weird to find one another. I don’t think the answer is “take away the internets!” (1/2)

I get that but my point is that knowing what they are and the subculture they represent is much more relevant for people seeking to make meaning of this, or to make policy to prevent it. You don’t need to “get” it know where it came from and the nihilist, joking-not-joking, manosphere chan-iverse.

I think the meaning for the rest of us is in the fact that they quoted the memes at all. It indicates their exposure to and probable extensive participation in a specific culture that exists online. And correlations can be drawn between that participation and acts of violence in the real world.

Yep. Although I guess I'd say "not all press," if @socialistdogmom.bsky.social and @ellereeve.bsky.social count as part of the press. Their work has definitely investigated this culture and connected a lot of the dots.

Mind you, this is someone who is ALREADY the subject of a federal investigation and whose house was raided by the FBI last year! Like others in Adams’ inner circle, and Adams himself, I think there is just a deep weirdness there, aside from the laughable criminality.

Can you elaborate on that? What are the examples of places where civil society is more coordinated, and what does that look like? I am trying to envision what an American version of it could be.

Honestly, I don't see where you are going after Reihan's character. You're pointing out where his commentary or analysis has been incoherent, vacuous or contradictory. That's VERY fair game given that he's putting himself out there as a public intellectual.
