Claim: Alligator Alcatraz has been closed down. Two images of tweet screenshots making this claim. In a federal lawsuit filed by environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams issued a preliminary injunction ruling that Alligator Alcatraz cannot accept any more detainees. A preliminary injunction is a TEMPORARY order put in place until a court can make a final decision in a case. The federal and state governments are attempting to appeal the judge’s order. According to Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, around 400 people are still detained at Alligator Alcatraz. The exact number is unknown. The immigrants currently imprisoned there would be moved to other facilities, but not released. The lawsuit filed by the Miccosukee Tribe & environmental groups primarily focuses on the environmental impacts of the facility on the Everglades, rather than on humanitarian or ethical concerns. There are currently three federal lawsuits against Alligator Alcatraz. No lawyers or journalists have been allowed to enter since the opening of the facility. Legal access to the facility is the primary issue of a lawsuit filed by Sanctuary of the South and other legal groups against the Trump administration. A third lawsuit, filed on behalf of a detainee married to a US citizen, argues that the state doesn’t have the legal authority to operate the facility, and the officers there are not properly trained or certified under federal law.
