A new MSc fledging the lab. Congrats Jonavan!
Congratulations to Jing Jonavan Leong on defending his master thesis looking at effects of environmental factors on early and late growth rate in nestling collared, pied and hybrid flycatchers!!! It was fun working with you on this project! @qvarnstromlab.bsky.social @animecol-uu.bsky.social

And the 2024 field crew is now complete and ready to measure a few hundred flycatcher pairs and their nestlings! The woods are beautiful and full of birds who are currently very busy building nests and laying eggs!

Sexual selection can be good, bad & ugly with negative consequences of sexual conflict for population demographics. David Berger @dbergerbiol.bsky.social shows that these effects may be reversed when environmental complexity is considered.

Uppsala Uni's Animal Ecology program is here, give it a follow!

Our annual symposium is on its way, highlighting the diversity in amazing research on all things evolution, covering insects, birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians & their relationships with plants, microbes & viruses.

'Revolution' happens tomorrow (our annual 2-day programme symposium)

Many will present their research. Invited speakers are Caroline Isaksson, Lund University and Luc Bussière, University of Gothenburg who will share their findings and scrutinise our 'revolution' 👀

Exciting days await us!

Germline removal increased stress resistance in both sexes, but increased lifespan only in males, and only when high costs of mating were excluded (above). Germline removal reduced growth but more so in females. Germline maintenance seems costlier for males than for females. 2/2
