Even with the simple style, the storyboard oozes Amemiya-ness at points though.

Really like the one cut (multiple cuts?) during Kobato's interview with Fujidera in Shoshimin #18, where they're shot from a distance. Strong, legible posing that reflects each individual's personality, and the lighting from the window behind makes Kobato's outline stand out.

Shoshimin: How to become Ordinary #16
May 11, 2025 at 10:28 PM
Finally, we have the reunion between the fox and the wolf. Laughing, because how could you not, as they destroy a wall with a hammer while a fire burns close by.

A truly ordinary, truly magical moment.

Speaking of lights at the park, we also see several shots of a lamppost during Urino & Osanai's conversation. While there are always bugs flying around the light, after Urino leaves the park, we cut to a shot of the lamppost again, and this time there aren't any bugs.

One shot of the moon before Kobato is told that he was never ordinary. One shot of the moon after Urino is told that he is ordinary.

A clear, brutally straightforward contrast.

The conversation between Kobato & Kengo is a short but very significant one. Almost feels like parting words or an exchange before a final battle, with genuineness & sincerity that seems to come from both of them.

If one lacks all the necessary qualities of a detective other than "initiative" and "self-indulgence" as Osanai says, then what's left is an arrogant wannabe who can't solve mysteries but meddles with them anyway, while unaware of or uninterested in the harm they cause.

And on top of this, if Urino had paid more attention when interviewing Satomura, he might have been able to remember that all the hammers in the shed (including the replaced stolen one) were smaller claw hammers, as opposed to large sledgehammers like the one Osanai was carrying.
May 11, 2025 at 10:20 PM
One example is the "hammer" thing that Osanai brings up. Urino, whether on purpose or not, changed the words of his interviewee, even though he considered it to be a crucial piece of evidence (and he was pretty disrespectful during the interview as well; not a good journalist).
May 11, 2025 at 10:20 PM
When you try to solve a mystery, you end up asking undesirable questions, crossing boundaries, and trampling on people's feelings & secrets.

This directly connects to what Osanai tells Urino regarding his abilities & character in this episode.

The episode rhymes in many ways with Kanbe's #9: a confrontation that feels final and perhaps one-sided at first, until the tide suddenly starts to turn. The similarities in structure allows for a contrast that may be as brutal as what occurs within the episode:

Shoshimin #16 sees the return of the brilliant Nobuyuki Takeuchi (#2) on storyboard, with Shoushi Ishikawa on direction. Both the pervasive sense of tension in the first half, as well as the gradual descent & devastation in the second, are perfectly portrayed (cont.)

I agree n-buna, I agree.

One interesting thing to note regarding the video:

In one of the cuts, we see a reference to H. G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds". While the obvious reason for this is that the novel popularized the idea of octopus-like Martians, that's not all there is to it.

Noticed a mistake on Crunchyroll's Shoshimin page, in the description of the show.

The first sentence makes it seem like "wisdom work" is the "bitter experience", when in reality it's the name given to Kobato's detective work (which then led to said bitter experience)

Really love the use of a pendulum wave during the chorus in the new Shoshimin OP.

The strings of each pendulum in a pendulum wave are all of different lengths, and the spheres at the end, unlike a Newton's cradle, never come into contact with one another.

Episode 1: Kobato & Osanai riding double, casually breaking laws while showing that they're comfortable with the proximity
Episode 11: Osanai putting the bike in between her & Urino as they safely walk over the same bridge, followed by his blunder of judging her by appearance

What's especially interesting is how Osanai & Urino, who are supposedly dating, are shot either individually or with a clear separation between them, whether that's in the form of lines & objects dividing the two, or in how their gazes are directed at different things.

Shoshimin #11 sees the return of series director Mamoru Kanbe on storyboards, which can be felt immediately through the use of geometric compositions and shots that create distance between the viewer & the characters.

Even Yorushika's band logo is subtly included!

But in the end, we see a fox and a wolf, joyfully running in the water and playing with each other, hinting at the idea that the acceptance of themselves for who they are might be what leads to a true sense of freedom.

So we see the two walking away from puddles, as we flash through scenes from an "ordinary" high school life that the two may have envisioned as being their ideal future. Cuts are bathed in beautiful blues and brilliant rays of light.
April 5, 2025 at 5:20 PM
In the aftermath of the “breakup” in episode 10, we see Kobato & Osanai both alone in the rain. Without each other to rely on, they must hold their own umbrellas, trying to not be hit by the countless raindrops so as to become unordinary once more.
