NYC has been declared a sanctuary city and as part of that I think NYPD is already technically forbidden from helping ICE, though there are certainly many cases of them adhering to the letter and not the spirit of the law.

without spoiling people too much who haven’t read the light novels, rae is slowly maneuvering claire into a position where she can denounce the nobility and side with the common people when the revolution comes, so that claire will be spared from execution even though she’s a noble.

rae loves her more than life itself. it’s just that at this point in the story claire *knows* rae is still hiding something from her and isn’t 100% sure that all of rae’s declarations of love aren’t just part of the deception.

It’s a heartbreaking moment because Claire goes on to reflect that she knows Rae is still deceiving her about something, and decides to let Rae deceive her for just a bit longer because despite her doubts she believes that Rae really does love her.
