In this sense DND has no true core identity upon which all players can relate, which is a shame.

Ultimately what happens is there is no unified understanding of DND, just islands of experiences and some shared assumptions. I think that makes the game hard to get into for new players (or players at new tables) because their expectations don’t match the experience.

There’s an argument here for negative design space so that it can take on whatever form suits the table best, but the rules and guides provide for no structure for how to go about that. Just winging it until you find what works for you.

Reviewing art is not like reviewing cookware. A good review of art is *never* about “is it worth it.” A good review is about understanding it better than before, and understanding the reviewer better than before, even and especially if you disagree!

It’s about whether or not it’s worth spending time and money on, right? That means different things to everyone! Someone who hates that genre should be able to meet that game where it is and review it. And if they hate it they should say so!
