In order for public housing to be a plausible solution NYC would need to streamline their building and zoning codes to make it not exorbitantly expensive to build and prevent NIMBYs from stopping it, but if they do that, then there would already be private sector construction... 1/

There are definitely things to criticize about Scott Alexander but he does some great scathing criticism of the people that defunded USAID and that defend defunding it

The case of slavery's legality in the US (and other countries) is analogous. *Technically* slavery is legal in the US, per the text of the 13th amendment, but the way in which it is legal has many distinction and limitations that make it misleading to say unconditionally slavery is legal in the US.
