If it's any comfort (gesundheit!), allergies are caused by a branch of the immune system that evolved to protect us from parasitic infections. 🧪 Here's a nice explainer of what causes seasonal allergies and some tips for how to control them. By @meghanbartels.bsky.social on Scientific American
Why Seasonal Allergies Are So Miserable
Plants are just trying to reproduce; immune systems are just trying to keep us safe

This article is full of fab Peter quotes on declining a Knighthood, not contributing to REF, being unimpressed by the sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” and the “lunatic right” of the Tory party ….. definitely worth a read 🧪🔭⚛️

He was a real legend and will be missed 😔

Random thought: one of my favorite connections in the original Star Wars trilogy is C-3PO saying in Episode IV that he's not much of a storyteller and then he tells a story to the Ewoks in Episode VI that gets them to fight the Empire and save all their asses

Incidentally, my late PhD advisor, who got his degree during WWII and was one of the greatest optical scientists in history, was a very old school teacher. But he was kind and supportive and understanding, even though his classes were very difficult.
Even twenty years ago, we had a term for professors who are absurdly strict and cruel to their students. We called them “assholes.”
