More women at higher risk of breast cancer should be offered a mastectomy, according to researchers at @qmul.bsky.social and @lshtm.bsky.social New analysis has found it's cost-effective way of reducing risk of developing breast cancer compared to breast screening and medication.

This fantastic new study, led by colleagues at @kingscollegelondon.bsky.social and by our own Professor Patricia Munroe, is shining new light on the genetic basis for differences between the way twins experience their environments.
Researchers have found #genetic factors that may make people more or less sensitive to the environments they experience.

It is the largest genetics study of identical #twins to date.

🤱Preterm birth is the top cause of child mortality. Our team from @qmulfmd.bsky.social report in @nejm.org that an antibiotic (cotrimoxazole) during pregnancy doesn't increase birthweight but may reduce preterm birth by 40%. Work ongoing to study maternal microbiomes!

A study of almost 1000 pregnant women in Zimbabwe found that a daily dose of a commonly used, safe and inexpensive antibiotic may have led to fewer babies being born early. Among women living with HIV, those who received the antibiotic had larger babies who were less likely to be preterm.
