To help Germany finally snap out its macroeconomic hibernation, the planned changers to the debt brake must help plug the country’s huge investments needs.

Early results in the coalition talks now show that there’s a real risk that the incoming government could still squander this.

Germany will have one of the lowest public investment ratios of all EU countries in 2025 (EU Commission forecast). The idea of just doing additional defence spending around the debt brake without reforming it - while Germany's infrastructure and economy crumble - falls short.

Differences in consumption patterns between lower- and higher-income households suggest the potential for inflation inequality, but evidence on the scale and drivers of this disparity remains scarce. This column uses ‘distributional consumer price indices’ to reveal a clear and systematic gap in inflation rates across income percentiles in the US, reflecting the varying consumption patterns of households at different income levels. The findings suggest that a substantial number of individuals considered above the poverty line based on the official Consumer Price Index actually fall below it due to different inflation dynamics, and may be missing out on poverty alleviation programmes.

Yet, the fire camps remain the most humane places to serve time in the California prison system, and it is the only program that offers full expungement of criminal records after release.

Folks don't go to fire camp for the money, they go for the freedom.
