We present a form-finding tool for designing developable sweep-surfaces that align to user-defined objectives. The optimized sides of the tube are cut from a flat sheet and assembled into a stiff structure for architecture, furniture, or lighting design applications, such as this trefoil knot lamp.

Fold a piece of paper into a straight tube with a triangular cross-section. Glue the sides. Can you feel the stiffness?

Our SIGGRAPH 2025 paper, "C-Tubes: Design and Optimization of Tubular Structures Composed of Developable Strips", extends this process to arbitrary tube shapes and cross-sections.

We optimize gaits to achieve motion objectives—capturing the complex interplay between deformation and locomotion—while remaining energy efficient. Our method figures out how stingray flaps their pectoral fins, how cats land on their feet, or how to bring broken robots back to life.

If you were a snake, how would you slither and solve this obstacle race?

In our SIGGRAPH 2025 paper "Inverse Geometric Locomotion", we investigate control problems for deformable bodies in dissipation- and inertia-dominated setups.

Excited to present our work on "Computational Design of a Kit of Parts for Bending-Active Structures" at SIGGRAPH Asia 2024! A joint work with @udaykusupati.bsky.social, Seiichi Suzuki, @markpauly.bsky.social.

See you tomorrow at 10:45 in Hall B5 (1) to learn more about these flying pieces!
