"When his fellow passengers on board a ship were all unnerved by a storm, [Pyrrho] kept calm and confident, pointing to a little pig in the ship that went on eating, and telling them that such was the unperturbed state in which the wise man should keep himself."

I just had one of my Intro to Philosophy students tell me that she successfully used the Five Modes of Agrippa on her father after he tried to browbeat her into believing that Tylenol causes autism.

This, folks, is the reason I teach Pyrrhonian skepticism every semester.

Wow! A new paper!
One of the main topics in scholarship on ancient skepticism is the "rustic vs. urbane" debate: whether skeptics were weirdo forest sages with no beliefs or normal guys with everyday beliefs. I think this debate is kind of silly and I show why in this paper!

Pyrrho pointed out that this was delusional.
I fell in love with philosophy in high school tnx to Socrates and the idea that, when we discuss with each other, the correct reasoning leads us all to truth. After 25 years I'm more convinced than ever that this is delusional on so many levels, but can't let go of this idea.

Pyrrho, makes the revolutionary move of substituting the question “What must I know to live well?” with the sceptical question “How can I still live well in the absence of knowledge?”

Pyrrho was the Hellenistic Greek founder of the philosophical system of “Skepticism.” Now there is evidence that some of his work was direct translations of Buddhist texts he encountered while stationed in India as part of Alexander the Great’s army.
