Sloan is a surprisingly good writer. There's a Googler, a bookstore clerk, likeable weirdos, a secret society, good old-fashioned sleuthing, and more. A really fun read.

Completely off topic, with apologies, but I just finished the audio book of Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. And it strikes me as the sort of book you might enjoy. Have you read it?

If fact-transmission is what the humanities have become, that's a huge humanities failure. I was educated at liberal arts colleges in the humanities. And fact-transmission was 1 of aspect of my education. Another was learning to think critically: logic, exegesis, foreign lang., history of ideas, &c.
