Weirdly I’m gonna miss seeing the old rusting hulk looming over the river.

Yeah Orson Scott Card is probably a more direct comparison for type of betrayal, but nobody else really had the size of fandom Rowling does.

It goes without saying that their takes on Indian politics are also shit. It’s the same personality profile you’d expect from a MAGA shithead here, there’s just a lot more of them.

Everyone is swirling down the same radicalization spiral as bored nihilists wind each other up to burn the world down.
November 23, 2025 at 9:15 PM
TBH it’s probably not all or even mostly poor people. There’s lots of nepo-baby failsons in India who make a sport put of trolling.

They like participating in coarsening discourse and if you call them out on it they’ll say “they interfere in our politics so we shit on theirs.”

They took over the US Digital Service to turn it into DOGE. Is that agency just gone now?

Pedos in peril!

The think people miss about Ned Stark is assuming he’s being naive. But it’s clear he knows the danger he’s in. He doesn’t want to be responsible for Cersei’s children getting killed so he willingly takes the risk. He’s got a soft spot for protecting babies, which is also why he adopts Jon.

A Georgian tax would also be good, but it’s a different approach from a wealth tax specifically to address the power of the billionaires. It can’t work the same way because at their level the wealth can be sheltered and disguised in all kinds of ways.

That’s not the sort of thing Liz Warren’s proposal was. The idea behind this one is “it’s this or the guillotines buddy.”
November 23, 2025 at 1:05 AM
That’s true, but I kind of saw it as an initial effort to just build up the muscles at the IRS to start appraising wealth and figure out where it’s hidden and how it flows once it’s being taxed. Once we get a sense for that then we can really turn the screws.
November 21, 2025 at 5:53 PM
A wealth tax would be a one-time corrective to address inequality through redistribution. So you wouldn’t really want to fund an ongoing program, like free college, with it. It’d be better put towards big one-time capital investments, like greening the grid or even paying down the debt.

Donald Trump was abrogating the first amendment the right way.

Really seems like the Dems are a party that largely looks like America minus the right wing nutjobs, while the GOP are a party of right wing nutjobs that manages to capture a critical mass of cranks in the middle.

I maintain a history community where the rule is basically “no electioneering” and the expectation is that if you want to talk politics you better have an active JSTOR account.

And, in fact, the growth in battery powered “micromobility” options significantly mitigates most of the downsides and make it really pretty nice to be car free in these places. It will definitely improve life for kids in the “can’t quite drive yet but have lots of stuff to do outside the house” age.

One frustration with discourse on this is it’s framed as Manhattan vs. Sunbelt sprawl.
But there’s many types for “suburb” including ones where people have single-family homes and yards but can still reach almost all their routine destinations within a 30-min walk, including transit to the city.

Merch game is weak across the board.

Oh wait I forgot my “No he didn’t” list, which is probably the most load-bearing one. That blocks everyone who is bad at reading.
November 17, 2025 at 9:08 PM
I have blocklists up for MAGA, tankies, spammers, and one group called “negative Nancys” (you can probably guess who goes there). It takes surprisingly few people blocked, like low 4-figures, before almost all the annoying stuff just stops existing for you.

Well they do seal them away using a pop-ified version of Korean Shamanistic ritual instead of needing to summon Jesus.

Rural South vs. rural elsewhere is basically racists when other races live alongside you in signifiant numbers vs. racists when they’re a theoretical idea/novelty

I’ve always thought the concept of ‘death’ was just too easy to process and understand. I’m so glad we’ve finally found a way to make it more fraught and confusing to explain to children.

The only sphere where these are mutually exclusive is how many column inches you spend using climatey buzzwords instead of jobby buzzwords so I guess that’s all they know. How do they reckon we address climate change without creating jobs to do it? What do they think a “job” is? Do they even know?
