I look forward to your book about Ernest and Emily - I've read alot about Shackleton but haven't come across much about his wife - I'm very interested!

(6) Anyway that's it, everyone survived and a lot of it was because of people like Perce Blackborow who was chill and funny and had a great will and longing to survive. He was awarded the Bronze Polar Medal and died in in 1949 at age 53 in Wales.

(5) He could not stand, so he was put out of the boat and was the first person to sit. He suffered the gnarliest injuries out of anyone on the expedition, with his frostbite turning to gangrene and having all the toes on his left foot amputated in what can only be described de-sausaging.

(3) Once he had stopped screaming, Blackborow said "They'd get a lot more meat off you sir", an amazing come back for someone who had been in a barrel for three days. The captain also thought it was great, and he quickly became everyone's favourite, proving to be very helpful in the kitchen.
