Optimist: the cup is half full

Pessimist: the cup is half empty

Teacher: the cup is operating within its zone of proximal development and can likely progress from half empty to half full with the support of a more knowledgeable other
Optimist: the cup is half full

Pessimist: the cup is half empty

Linguist: quantities are described with regard to a reference state; thus we can efficiently convey whether the cup was more recently full or empty

If anyone’s been on the fence about picking up a copy: I’ve used excerpts from Because Internet in my teaching (VCE English Language, basically a proto-linguistics course) for years now — if this book can engage high schoolers, it can certainly engage you, dear reader! Highly, highly recommend.

Having been listening to @lingthusiasm.bsky.social recently (I'm through the first three years so far!) I've been meaning to pick up @gretchenmcc.bsky.social's book, and today I discover it's on sale! So I guess I'm getting that now.
