And these cutbacks apply to local govt like schools and police depts as well, even post-COVID, when most states have seen increases in state and local govt hiring.

Residents want responsive govt that can address their needs. That can't happen with reduced staffing

The reductions in state workforce stretch across the departments. No topic area was safe.

In search of "efficiency," these reductions make it harder for state govt to achieve its goals.

A push to outsourcing means relying on third-party contractors with less in-house expertise

While New Jerseyans starve and face skyrocketing costs, the ultrarich are getting new tax shelters thanks to the GOP tax bill

The ultrarich are getting even richer at the expense of the rest of us

These kinds of "studies" drive me bonkers

Business survival rate in NJ is very high, but the state scores low on some random report card bc of tax environment

Maybe judging business environment based on actual business data is more important than marginal tax rates on big corporations

Interesting that the policymakers in this kind of article do not even contemplate regulations on, you know, the cars that killed the e-bike riders.

In "low-tax" Tennessee, working-class residents pay way more of their income to taxes than in "high-tax" New Jersey.

Why? Because of outsize reliance on the sales tax.

Why would NJ shift to a system that rewards the wealthy while making the poor pay more?
