My recommendation for the Christmas movie this year is Guillermo del Toro's Pinnochio on the first day of Christmas and his Frankenstein on the second.

It's a good thing Thom Yorke doesn't enunciate very well. Most of Radiohead's back catalogue would be far too depressing to listen to if you could clearly hear the lyrics.

#scribesandmakers Dec 20. What do you do to discourage or prevent insects and animals from eating your garden?

I occasionally order some lady bug larvae online, when I get a bad aphid infestation. They eat their bellies full, mature and then fly off.

If the kids who listened to Radiohead and Pulp and Oasis in the 90s grew up today, what would they be listening to?

I have absolutely no sense of the music landscape right now. Something happened somewhere after after Billie Eilish, that doesn't allow me to absorb any new music information. A […]

The third one is "god and the devil" are both in the details.

The devil is in the details means that the details is where screwups are hiding.

"God is in the details" means something slightly different. Vermeer spent months painting this, blocking out the […]

These three are more personal, and some fiction writers may not agree, but it's worth thinking about.

Asking the right questions in functional writing means "who is it for, what do they want." In fiction, it's trickier, but the general message translated to […]

If you were to teach a writing course, what would be the most important lesson?

I did a lecture on writing once; academic rather than fiction, but some of the lessons translate.

Note that this is a probabilistic calculation. A catastrophic collision could happen sooner than 2.8 days of no maneuvers. In our (extremely computationally expensive) collision […]

Somebody asked on twitter to adapt one of my stories (maybe a hustler, it's hard to tell). In any case, I've decided to release all my short stories under CC-BY.

That means anybody can do what they like. Run it through […]

Why are scifi and fantasy always lumped together when they're such different genres? I think I've finally figured it out.

It 's to keep the nerds confined to one, clearly marked, section of the bookshop.

Mission Impossible is pretty much a perfect franchise, but part of me wishes they'd kept going with the different authorial directors per movie. There's something really cool about the way each director takes the key ingredients and makes their own thing with them.
