Probably not an instance of ChatGPT, but almost certainly an instance of Brahman.
Irresponsible editorial unfit for an ostensibly serious journalism outlet. This person needs treatment for their narcissistic sociopathy, not a platform. I hope their spouse leaves them and finds a loving human to partner with. He deserves better.

So those artists and audiences will seek each other in meatspace. Novels become storytelling, music recordings become live shows, films become theater. Yes, the reality tv and wrestling audience will be tuned to the infinite jest AI (cheaper), but they aren't buying meaningful art at scale today.

Which ultimately will be good for humanity - social media has killed the Enlightenment and the fascists are rolling back democracy everywhere. It will absolutely destroy the livelihoods of people who sell digital arts - films, books, music, etc - without scarcity there is no value.

It's almost exactly the same information environment as the 16th century. The printing press and the sheer tonnage of misinformation it engendered is why we invented editors and academic peer review. People will seek out spaces online for information consumption that can perform the same function.

Never said people were leaving the internet? But we will be leaving anonymous p2p forums. Would you read or respond to this if there was a 99.9% chance I am a bot? Would you watch a YT car repair video if there was no way of knowing if the host was a real human or the repair legit? Of course not.

Like the Cold War? The late 20th Century was pretty comfortable with walled gardens. In a few years, serious people will be off socials. Why dialogue like this with AI? Those eyeballs will land in places that can guarantee accuracy in conditions almost exactly like the post-Gutenberg print era.

I don't follow the simile. Capitalism (and its inequities like healthcare) is far more entrenched then information consumption. The latter is as ephemeral as a teenager's attention, we've seen at two or three revolutions here print to web to video/social media since 1990.

It's just a return to the post-War model. Information will be filtered through journalists, editors and academics (or 21st Century analogues) you can trust to filter out the signal from noise. It's doomsday for the internet of 1995-2025 but is that a bad thing? Have you seen the state of democracy?
February 16, 2024 at 6:55 PM
Is the heat death of the internet a bad thing? Won't we just go back to live arts and local communities when we internalize the falsehood of the digital? A 20th Century model where meaning and our knowledge of the world is made by curated experts (eg academics and editors)?

I love the silver surfer! Who's the artist?
We'll never be free from AI paranoia, so as long as the burden of detective work keeps falling to the masses
I want to put my pipe and deerstalker hat away for five minutes.

ok it is actually too good that the white censorship committee not only disqualified someone for going to Nepal (which they thought was Tibet) but also the actual winner of Best Novel _had_ gone to Tibet and no one on the WCC even noticed (fortunately.) Nor did this matter in the least!

"That is to say I do not consider myself justified in eradicating the men... and allowing the avengers in the shape of the children to grow up for our sons and grandsons. The difficult decision has to be taken, to cause this people (Jews) to disappear from the earth." - -SS Himmler October 1943

Sure, but how will you know what is Real? In a few years when the fidelity with generative AI is perfected you won't be able to tell the difference between Real and Unreal. And without that difference, it is all Unreal.

...and that's the exact minute when Blue State citizens should turn in new W-4s with no federal withholding.

No surprises here. Education is how you turn white Republicans into white Democrats and Christians into agnostics. Gutting education is a timeless entry in the autocrats' playbook, right up there with income inequality and scapegoating minorities.

@cstross.bsky.social's The Laundry Files (eldritch spy comedy/horror) are amazing! I wish I could read them again for the first time. An absolute delight and some of the best social commentary you will find anywhere. Or his Merchant Princes if you'd rather something a little further from home...

I'm looking forward to more!

This is very true. But then, subcultures live in rejection to dominant culture, no? I struggle with this one myself. How does authentic protest/counterculture exist without Othering? Or perhaps more accurately, mirroring back the Othering the dominant culture has put on the minority?
