📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

'Meredith,' some guys ask, 'why won't you shove AI into Signal?'

Because we love privacy, and we love you, and this shit is predictable and unacceptable. Use Signal ❤️

Seriously please give your money to worker cooperatives
Please consider donating to Servo, a “non partisan” browser that’s still got compelling technical chops and is partially maintained by an actual worker co-op with some of the brightest minds in browser engineering: servo.org
Servo aims to empower developers with a lightweight, high-performance alternative for embedding web technologies in applications.
Servo is a web rendering engine written in Rust, with WebGL and WebGPU support, and adaptable to desktop, mobile, and embedded applications.

Today, we’re deprecating Create React App for new apps, and encouraging existing apps to migrate to a framework.

We’re also providing docs for when a framework isn’t a good fit for your project, or you prefer to start by building a framework.

I -DO- think “Instagram” is an interesting app…but I’m more interested in the “small business, artist and creator visual updates” parts of it, rather than the “it’s just a photo posting app” parts.

Can you make something that really works for small biz, that’s different than today’s IG?

That’s the big platform clones theory. I like the 1000 apps theory:

Hackernews, Reddit @frontpage.fyi

Goodreads, Letterboxd - Bookhive, Skylights

A big heartfelt thank you from all of us at Signal to every person who has ever used Signal, gotten your friends to make the switch, and donated to support our work. It is truly an honor to build Signal for you. 💙

One thing that we didn't seem to talk about when we were talking about waterfalls is that you can more easily cache them on the server.

If you have a data fetch dependent on another data fetch on the server, you may be able to cache the first one, or both.
