UT System Board of Regents was like, "thanks for the 5 month notice, Hartzell, but time to go..."

I want to be patient w/myself, but I'm struggling to understnd this text & its spinning me out. 50 pgs in & all I (think) I understand is that death is one of few material things the colonial subject owns, so the death drive can be understood as an agentic form of resistance?

Every now and then I read something that makes me think, "I can't wait to teach this some day..." Today, it's the essay "The Historian as Curandera" in the book Medicine Stories: Essays for Radicals, by Aurora Levins Morales.

Whatever the platform, I will ALWAYS take the opportunity to hype up the work of Gloria Anzaldúa, José Esteban Muñoz, @radiorodriguez.bsky.social, Michael Hames-Garcia, and @rtrodrig.bsky.social.

And with that last final submitted, I'm officially done with my first semester of my Ph.D program.

This semester was kind of a slay.

I don't romanticize *ANY* part of academia.

But, NACCS is my academic home, & I've built beautiful community through my involvement the past few years.

I'm so grateful to be a part of two panel proposal submissions this year.

The work of submitting is done; now we wait.

Happy Ph.D. application submission anniversary day to me!

Sending lots of love and light to those submitting this cycle; remember that regardless of outcome, to submit materials is a tremendous effort and an accomplishment unto itself!

I don't know a lot, but I do know this to be true for my experience: we don't ever have to use again, even if we want to, and we don't have to do this alone.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out. 🙏🏽

I either bought this in a daze and completely forgot, or an anonymous gifter sent it to me.

Either way, I'm hella excited to dive into it soon!

Sitting with some thoughts after reading this, re: the figure of the addict and criminality. I'm particularly wondering what the addict's foil--the figure of the sober person--does, in terms of justifying incarceration & punitive forms of rehabilitation. (From the edited book Addiction Trajectories)
