While I wouldn't say the writing and characters were bad by any means, I also just wasn't super moved by it. But Masaaki Yuasa's direction? Kensuke's Ushio's score? Elite. It makes for an elevated animation experience.

I finally got around to watching the rest of this season after putting it off for a minute. Doga Kobo really went off. So many beautiful bits of animation throughout and they handled this segment of the story really phenomenally.
