In the 2000s, US Republicans thought about the world in similar ways to Britons, Europeans, Canadians.

This made for productive relationships regardless of who was in the White House.

I would also argue it's the culmination, or certainly a ripple effect of the slap on the wrist for the Bankers (just another facet of the capitalist class) following the 2008 financial crisis.

Eh? I feel like most people just adopt or allow the consciousness of the oppressive capitalist class to be reinforced in their minds. It's bad media literacy and a failure of critical thought, though, not because it reinforces in its own right.

That's pretty specious reasoning, don't you think? How would a fictional telling of systemic failings of the war on drugs mean that conclusively in reality that the war on drugs can't be ended.
